A hot-water valve replacement cannot be priced properly until the valve, fault cause, heater requirements and safe access are confirmed.
Relief valves, expansion controls, tempering valves and thermostatic mixing valves do different jobs. A drain that releases water during heating does not automatically prove its valve has failed.

What changes the replacement scope?
- Valve function: A tank safety valve is not interchangeable with an expansion, tempering or mixing valve.
- Heater details: The make, model, energy source and existing valve markings guide compatible product selection.
- Certification and ratings: The replacement must suit its application, connections, temperature, pressure and capacity requirements.
- Fault cause: Excess supply pressure, heating controls or another inlet component can make a valve appear faulty.
- Access and isolation: Safe cooling, isolation, draining and refilling depend on the unit location and installation.
- Existing condition: Corroded threads, seized fittings and damaged pipework can add work that was not visible initially.
- Testing: The safety or temperature-control function must be checked before the system returns to service.
The Australian Building Codes Board’s WaterMark Product Search records certified plumbing products and their authorised scope. Certification alone does not make a valve suitable for every heater.
What should the written quote cover?
Ask the plumber to name the valve, diagnosed fault and proposed replacement. The quote should distinguish valve work from pipe alterations, discharge-line repairs and unrelated heater faults.
- safe isolation, cooling, draining and refilling
- the compatible certified valve and required fittings
- corroded connections or pipework included in the scope
- testing, adjustment and commissioning
- required plumbing notification or other trade involvement
- clear exclusions and approval for unforeseen work

Who can replace or service the valve in Queensland?
Installing or repairing a water heater or tempering valve is regulated plumbing work in Queensland. Use an appropriately licensed plumber for diagnosis, replacement, testing and return to service.
Thermostatic mixing valves have an additional boundary. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission requires the applicable endorsement for commissioning or maintaining a TMV within that scope.
Gas, electrical, solar or heat-pump faults may require another appropriately licensed trade. The word valve does not make work on electrical or gas controls part of a plumbing replacement.
Stay clear of hot discharge
Do not cap, plug, clamp or redirect a relief valve or its drain. Discharged water can scald, and the outlet is part of the heater’s safety system.
From a safe position, record where the water appears and whether it follows heating or continues while the heater is idle. Note the heater model and visible valve markings without dismantling anything.
Keep people away from uncontrolled hot water. If water reaches wiring or electrical equipment, do not touch it and use the appropriate electrical emergency response.
