Tree roots may be blocking a drain when problems affect several fixtures and keep returning, but symptoms alone can't confirm the cause.
Roots can enter a join, crack or other opening, then catch waste and narrow the pipe. Clearing restores space, but it doesn't seal the defect that allowed entry.
Signs that point to a shared drain blockage
A main-drain problem becomes more likely when several fixtures change together. One slow basin or shower can still be a local trap or branch blockage.
- Several fixtures drain slowly: The obstruction may sit downstream of the affected branches.
- Toilets or drains gurgle: Air and wastewater may be moving through a restricted section.
- Water levels change unexpectedly: Discharge from one fixture may affect another connected fixture.
- A low fixture or external overflow point backs up: The shared line may not be carrying incoming wastewater.
- The blockage returns after clearing: Roots, a structural defect, deposits or poor pipe alignment may still be present.

How roots get into a sewer pipe

The root doesn't necessarily create the first defect. Movement, an open joint, cracking, deformation or previous damage may provide the entry path.
Finding roots therefore answers only part of the problem. The inspection must also show where they entered and whether the surrounding pipe can still support a durable repair.

A camera can identify root location and show pipe condition when the lens can travel through a sufficiently clear line. Heavy obstruction may need partial clearing before useful footage is possible.

How plumbers remove roots
A licensed drainer may use mechanical cutting or suitable water jetting. The choice depends on pipe material, diameter, access, root mass and structural condition.
Purpose-built jetters can use root-cutting nozzles, but high-pressure water and moving hoses can cause severe injuries. Powered cutters can also damage a vulnerable pipe or become trapped.

Clearing roots isn't the same as repairing the pipe
Cutting roots can restore flow while leaving the join, crack or hole open. Urban Utilities warns that roots often return to a pipe from which they were cleared.
A local repair may suit an isolated accessible defect. Relining may suit a pipe that can be cleaned, prepared and structurally supported for the chosen system.
Severe displacement, deformation or collapse can prevent effective lining and require excavation or replacement. Inspection evidence should drive that decision, not the presence of roots alone.

Who is responsible for the affected section?
Responsibility follows the actual sewer connection and blockage location. It doesn't always follow the fence line.
Urban Utilities and Unitywater each publish private and provider-side boundaries, but their arrangements aren't identical. Check the provider for the address and the property's drainage plan.

How to reduce repeat root blockages
- Repair the entry defect: Clearing alone leaves the access path available.
- Keep the footage: Record the defect location, repair and post-work condition for later comparison.
- Map drains before planting: Consider mature tree size, root behaviour and the actual pipe route.
- Choose planting carefully: Use local provider and nursery guidance rather than one universal distance rule.
- Monitor a retained risk: If repair is deferred, follow the licensed drainer's inspection plan instead of waiting for another overflow.
Don't cut external roots without considering tree stability, ownership and vegetation rules. A qualified arborist may need to assess the tree before excavation or root pruning.

What to do during a sewage backup
Stop using connected toilets, taps, showers and appliances. Keep people and pets away from wastewater, and don't open sewer access points.
